This magical composition reflects the beauty of Egyptian classical music with a hint of modern feel by the guitar
(an instrument not commonly used in Egyptian classical music).

Daret Al Ayaam

Mohammed Abdel Wahab composed “Daret Al Ayaam” with lyrics by Maamoon El Shinawi. The song was released in 1970, just four years before Om Kolthoum’s death.

“Daret Al Ayaam” translates as “The Days Gone By”. This is a love song, but one of reconciliation. The woman and her lover argued and have been estranged, but now he has returned. She has forgotten the argument and is ready to start over with him.

Even though it’s not a song from the Golden Era (1940-60), it has THE feel of the Golden Era of music and dance of Egypt, as almost all Om Koulthoum’s songs do. Om, a Golden Era artist, evoked that quality in all her songs.

While creating an interpretation of this piece, inspiration from the Golden Era dancers was inevitable – Suheir Zaki, of course, and Naima Akef, Samia Gamal and Nagwa Fouad.

Golden Days

An elegant composition requires a sleek translation, so the whole dance has a calm and relaxed vibe that recreates the elegance and feminine confidence of the Golden Days.

The steps inspired by the Golden Era will be acknowledged during the class. As well as the various instrumental arrangements of this song.

We will be working specifically with  “Daret Al Ayam” by Ahmad Abdelfattah, from the “Art of Belly Dance” album, available on iTunes.
