THE GOLDEN ERA
The Era of Glamour, Creativity, superb artistry and aesthetics. Many describe it simply as the cinematic era of Belly Dance. I describe it as the era of full-blown Creativity. Where dancers, musicians & composers explored their art and its presentation. They experimented, developed, and innovated their art form. As a result, they changed Belly Dance in Egypt forever and established the Golden standard for Egyptian Dance & Music until today. Let’s study each one of these artists individually. Even though we refer to the ” Era” as a whole, we must first look at the individual artists and the phenomena they brought to life. Thus, being the creators of the “Golden Era of Belly Dance.”
Let us look at their prominent role in influencing how we move, listen, dress, present and create until today; they set the bar very high and will forever be the source of inspiration for all generations of dancers.
So, without further ado, let’s delve into their legacy and enter the Golden era HQ!
Kitty Futsaki
A charming smile, a little skinny body, a lightness rarely found in a dancer, and an angelic laughing face, neither Egyptian nor Western, is a mixture of the two, but you feel comfortable looking at it.
She had an extraordinary talent in acting, she was not afraid to stand in front of Ismail Yassin and Faten Hamama, who were the King and Queen of Egyptian cinema. Nor was she afraid to stand in front of the cameras of many highly acclaimed directors, creating history in Egypt.
Countless rumors followed her suspicious disappearance. Here is a little bit of the 19 years (1946-1965) that Kitty spent in the magical world of Egyptian cinema.
NAIMA AKEF
Naima Akef – نعيمة عاكف –
7 October 1929 – 23 April 1966
One of the most famous Egyptian Belly dancers during the cinema’s Golden Era and starred in many films of the time. Born in Tanta on the Nile Delta, her parents were acrobats in the Akef Circus, one of the best-known circuses at the time. She started performing in the circus at four and quickly became one of the most popular acts due to her superb acrobatic skills. Sometime later, Naima’s family moved to the Bab el Khalq district of Cairo, but they travelled far and wide to perform.
SAMIA GAMAL
Samia Gamal – سامية جمال, born Zaynab Khalil Ibrahim Mahfuz (5 March 1924 – 1 December 1994), was an Egyptian belly dancer and film actress.
Born in the small Egyptian town of Wana in March 1924, Samia’s family moved just months later to Cairo and settled near the Khan El-Khalili bazaar. Many years later, Samia Gamal met Badia Masabni, who offered Samia an invitation to join her dance company; Samia accepted. Badia Masabni gave her the stage name Samia Gamal, and she began her dance career.
NAGWA FOUAD
Nagwa Fouad was born in the Gomrok neighbourhood in Alexandria, Egypt, to an Egyptian father who works as an electrician.
Her mother, a Palestinian national, died while she was still a child, and her father’s wife, who was like a mother to her, took care of her upbringing.
When she was only fourteen years old, her father asked her to marry her cousin, who was about 15 years older than her, but she firmly refused and fled from her father’s house, heading to Cairo, where she worked in an office, which later turned out to be an artist’s agent’s office.
