Dancing from your heart
I want to share my journey and findings with you so that you, too, can experience the pleasure of interpreting Egyptian Baladi Music with motion.
Years of living and interacting with Egyptians, studying the music and movements, and loving and being attached to the culture have taken me on a beautiful journey—one of discovering what was already alive in me from the beginning.
The first time I heard a Baladi piece, I was taken deeply by emotions I did not know I could feel in a culture that was not my own. It’s interesting to handle such a response to a sound not embedded in you from the beginning of this lifetime and yet feel like it has. Whatever it comes from or the reason for it is not the vital point, but that fact it does is. Driven by this natural attraction to the sound and its portrayal in motion, I wanted to dive in and absorb the understanding of Baladi and make it part of me.
The Egyptian soul
What is Baladi?
“Baladi, the soulful dance of Egypt. It’s the urbanized folklore dance style created by the people to express and share moments of joy and celebration. It has its specific sound, mood, motion, and portrayal of a culture that captivates the hearts of every dancer. The soft power of feminine expression through the sound captures the emotions of those who love the essence of Egypt and its glorious traditions and vibrant energy.”
Having its roots in tradition and its development with the ever-evolving abundant life energy of the Egyptian people, Baladi is continually changing. And merging, magically, the past culture with the freshness of now.
The word Balad means Country. Anything produced by that Country is Baladi. It relates to many aspects of Egyptian culture; for instance, you can use it to describe food or clothes. But I speak here of the Baladi music progression and its translation into movement.
Important aspects
The most important aspect of Baladi is the expression of what comes from your heart and soul.
Of course, there will always be the technical and structural elements that come about to create an art form. However, that will eventually be furthered by artists and then given back to the people.
It is an interesting fact that all folk art and popular art, which may or not have rules and structures, develop in society and cultural education with rules and structures. The above is a necessary development to pass on knowledge without the need for first-hand experience. As a result, it allows the art to reach much further.
So, Baladi, the natural music and dance of the Egyptian people, has a path that can be taught and understood even if you were not born in Egypt. Through this understanding, one can, with much devotion, grasp the emotional content. And begin to make that emotional element natural and innate to oneself; begin to feel, personify, and express the beauty of Baladi. The expression “own it” comes to mind, not in appropriating another culture, but in the sense of being so immersed in it that it is now part of you.
