Interviewer (I): Personally, I can hardly believe it \u2014 can you? Just look at Suheir Zaki after all these years. Tell us, where have you been hiding? You haven’t appeared since…was it ’92?<\/p>

S: I want to wish them all the best for the season and tell them how much I\u2019ve missed<\/em><\/p>

them \u2014 so, so much.<\/em><\/p>

I: Did I surprise you today with the song “Enta Omri”?<\/p>

S: Oh, absolutely.<\/p>

I: How did you feel when it started playing?<\/p>

S: I was deeply moved by the music; I felt it marked a turning point in my life \u2014specifically regarding my artistic career. My fame had grown far beyond the usual scope… And then I ran into a bit of trouble \u2014 it reminds me of a specific incident.<\/p>

You see, I was instinctively drawn to the musical introduction composed by the maestro Sayed Abdel Wahab.<\/p>

It was a first for Umm Kulthum; usually, the music would just have a brief instrumental phrase before she started singing immediately.<\/p>

But Abdel Wahab introduced something new \u2014 a four or five-minute instrumental prelude for the song *Enta Omri* (You Are My Life).<\/p>

He showcased the entire orchestra with each musician performing a solo. I felt the music was beautiful \u2014 that the introduction itself could be danced to. And if there were playful, flirtatious moments within the song, I could edit and arrange them to fit the dance incorporating my own style into the music. That was my approach. So, I took the music and danced to it. Naturally, Umm Kulthum was absolutely stunned.The great writer Hassanein Heikal saw me perform and, I suppose, mentioned it to Abdel Wahab or someone else.<\/p>

When the news reached her, she reacted strongly: “Who would dare dance to my music, sing it, or imitate me? What is this?” “Who is she? How could this happen?”<\/p>

She picked up the phone, called Abdel Wahab, and said, “Go see about this girl…” They used to call me “Long Hair” \u2014 [laughs] \u2014 well, before I became really famous, back when television discovered me.<\/p>

It was around, well, after ’63. They brought me from Alexandria, actually, to see what it was all about. They had halted the project \u2014 it just wasn’t working out.<\/p>

So, Abdel Wahab said, “Well, let me go see her \u2014 they say the girl performs really well.”<\/p>

He went to check me out, intending to tell her not to bother \u2014 not to work on it, not to do TV, cinema, or anything like that. Anyway, he went to the place where I was working.<\/p>

Five minutes before I went on stage \u2014 he was entering the venue… Did I see him? No, I didn’t. He had given instructions telling them, “Don’t tell her Abdel Wahab is here watching her.” So, indeed, no one told me. I went out and my troupe and the others were saying, “Yes, *Sitt* [Madam\/Lady] …” \u2014 they started calling me “*Sitt*,” you know, that title because I would break down the music beautifully, exceptional performance, deepfeeling. You see, with that kind of music, you can’t just have someone singing \u2014 that’s one thing \u2014 but dancing to Umm Kulthum’s songs is incredibly difficult. It takes real daring, plus the artistic capabilities to translate that music into movement; you need a highly refined musical ear.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

I: Yes, you are famous for your musical ear.<\/p>

S: Maestro Abdel Wahab, of course He told her,<\/p>

“Look, Madam, you sing with your voice, whereas this girl sings with her body.”<\/p>

If you saw her, you wouldn’t be able to say no. Anyway, he was convinced \u2014 that was the<\/p>

first step.<\/p>

At one point, a special party was organised, and she said, “I want to see her; I want to<\/p>

watch her perform.”<\/p>

It was held at a private home, not a public venue. I went \u2014 they hadn’t told me she was<\/p>

there. They just said, “Come along, we have a party.” I used to perform at weddings for<\/p>

this family \u2014 it was a well-known circle.<\/p>

So, I went in, and there \u2014 right in front of me \u2014 sat Umm Kulthum.<\/p>

I mean, she was sitting directly across from where I would be standing. I went to the<\/p>

band and said, “Oh my God, Umm Kulthum is out there!”They said, “Oh my God, really?” Then came the tuning \u2014 the *dozan* \u2014 which had to be<\/p>

absolutely flawless, like silk because if anyone hit a wrong note they\u2019d get torn apart; it<\/p>

would be a disaster.<\/p>

Anyway, we went out to perform, and my heart was pounding \u2014 *thump, thump, thump*.<\/p>

I won’t lie; I was terrified. My heart was racing, wondering if I\u2019d convey the right feeling<\/p>

and whether she\u2019d be convinced or perhaps she would stop me.<\/p>

After I achieved success, I felt \u2014 much like you do now \u2014 that the movies… It goes viral<\/p>

in ten seconds and racks up millions of views \u2014 all that stuff.<\/p>

It came as a surprise to people that someone would sing and dance to Umm Kulthum\u2019s<\/p>

songs. People would tell others about it, and when they didn’t believe it, they would<\/p>

come to see for themselves.<\/p>

They said, “We\u2019re actually coming on Thursday to see it.” I told them, “You really should<\/p>

\u2014 come and take a look; it\u2019s absolutely incredible.” Anyway, The Lady sat and watched<\/p>

us; after we finished, she came over and congratulated me. I couldn’t believe it.<\/p>

Mohamed Abdel Wahab \u2014 and I say this without embarrassment \u2026<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\u00a0I: After Soheir Zaki, a dancer came along who danced to his music and Umm Kulthum’s<\/p>

S: No, wait \u2014 it wasn’t just about the feeling; it was truly unparalleled. To find something<\/p>

where you could interpret the rhythm so gently and express it with such deep emotion \u2014<\/p>

trembling, standing there and creating that vibration.<\/p>

The music calls for an incredibly soft, subtle musical phrase \u2014 you could express it with<\/p>

your hands or your waist \u2014 it required such high sensitivity.<\/p>

It\u2019s not just about standing there and shaking; a simple tremor is one thing, but<\/p>

interpreting a musical phrase in sync with the violins and the harmony \u2014<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

I: No one could match you in that Umm Kulthum style.<\/p>

S: That\u2019s not just my opinion; Umm Kulthum herself, Maestro Abdel Wahab, everyone<\/p>

who saw me \u2014 Ihsan Abdel Quddous wrote about me, and Mr. Heikal used to come and<\/p>

watch, the great writer and journalist. I earned the admiration of people like Naguib<\/p>

Mahfouz, for instance, in a radio interview \u2014 on the “Voice of the Arabs” station \u2014 he<\/p>

was asked, “Who do you admire? What do you like to listen to when you’re upset or…”<\/p>

Want to liven things up?<\/p>

He told them, “I love that long-haired girl, Soheir Zaki; she should sing or dance to Umm<\/p>

Kulthum…” or to that traditional accordion style \u2014 I adore the accordion. I really love<\/p>

*Baladi* dancing to the accordion you know, the *talam*, *tram-tra* \u2014 those specific<\/p>

rhythms…I: Let’s hear them clearly \u2014 the beats. I want to hear how you do them.<\/p>

S: Well, I do it with my body \u2014 just…<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

I: No, let’s hear it vocally right now: *tala-lam-ta*…<\/p>

S: *Tra-um*… something like that…<\/p>

I: Tell us about the charity concerts and the events you held for Al Ahly Club \u2014 like when<\/p>

they won both the Cup and the League title?<\/p>

S: Yes, I threw a party for them and that dish you saw \u2014 it was a tribute to the artist…<\/p>

Look at that special touch… my own personal touch. I\u2019m actually a Zamalek fan, though<\/p>

I don’t really follow football anymore \u2014 that was back in the day when I used to go to the<\/p>

stadiums. I\u2019d go to the stadium to watch. So, when Zamalek Club would hold a party, I\u2019d<\/p>

wear a white outfit. I have fans there, you know \u2014 they love me. Then Al Ahly Club would<\/p>

hold a party and I\u2019d \u2014 What was I supposed to do? Wear a red suit? And the party was<\/p>

being broadcast live on TV \u2014 I mean, it was \u2014 You\u2019re bringing them joy \u2014 it wasn’t about<\/p>

who won. You\u2019re just making them happy. And they didn’t care about my team<\/p>

allegiance; they loved me \u2014 whether I was Zamalek or Al Ahly, they loved me.<\/p>

They told me, “It doesn’t matter to us; you’re with us, and we love you.” I said, “I love you<\/p>

too.” I mean…<\/p>

And when they played against each other \u2014 those beautiful matches \u2014 there was<\/p>

Captain Latif, God rest his soul. His commentary, he used to talk to the ball.<\/p>

He\u2019d say, “Oh, come on, just go in!” You know, he\u2019d talk to the ball, not the players. “Just<\/p>

go in, hit the net \u2014 please.” I really loved him so much. God rest his soul.<\/p>

I: As for the current generation \u2014 there\u2019s Fifi Abdou, Dina, Lucy, and who else?<\/p>

S: Well, Fifi is a beautiful Oriental dancer \u2014 she performs with the cane and *galabeya*,<\/p>

and she has such a commanding presence.<\/p>

She\u2019s got that authentic, real “daughter of the people,\u201d (Bint el Balad) down-to-earth<\/p>

charm and a great smile. Even when she sings, it\u2019s not bad \u2014 she has the talent and the<\/p>

ability to really energize the stage. Although, she told me that nowadays she doesn’t<\/p>

dance in nightclubs anymore.<\/p>

That\u2019s what she told me. She decided to stick to theatre; she told me \u2014 yes, she spoke<\/p>

to me and said, “Suheir, I\u2019ve decided to focus solely on theatre and cinema now.”<\/p>

I told her, “That was a great decision.” She talked about the atmosphere, encountering<\/p>

foreigners and all that \u2014 you know how it is \u2014 and we just chatted and joked around.<\/p>

But really, Dina is a charming dancer \u2014 not bad at all, actually quite good.She\u2019s hardworking and has improved significantly since she started; she\u2019s clearly<\/p>

gaining experience. But I do have a comment about that white outfit she wears; she<\/p>

really ought to embrace the traditional costume the authentic Oriental style.<\/p>

That micro-skirt look, it\u2019s “modern Oriental,” I suppose, but it\u2019s not really the classic<\/p>

Oriental dance costume. You have to take pride in the costume. Back in the day, we<\/p>

wore chiffon and satin long outfits with just a subtle slit \u2014 nothing like that micro-skirt.<\/p>

To be honest, it\u2019s not Oriental dance attire at all, no, really, it isn’t.<\/p>

Still, she\u2019s a dancer, a dear friend, and a beautiful person. She does plays, *Fawazeer*<\/p>

(TV specials), and so much more \u2014 she\u2019s truly multi-talented.<\/p>

She does theatre and film \u2014 she was in the movie *Ibn Ezz* \u2014 and she\u2019s active in both<\/p>

mediums, Dina, that is.<\/p>

Look, Raja (Dina), we just want an Oriental-style suit \u2014 it shouldn’t be entirely modern.<\/p>

I: I believe the best person to ever wear the dance costume the oriental style, was<\/p>

Soheir Zaki. I couldn’t possibly wear it myself \u2014 Soheir, I\u2019m talking to you \u2014 because<\/p>

you were the most beautiful the best-looking one in that style.<\/p>

S: Dina is incredibly intelligent, too; she\u2019s even studying, I heard she started her master’s<\/p>

degree and finished University. I really admire her keen intelligence \u2014 balancing all of<\/p>

that together, and mashallah, she has a son \u2014 I think \u2014 mashallah, he\u2019s absolutely<\/p>

adorable. She showed me his picture. She was hesitant to reveal it. We were on a<\/p>

program together, and she showed me his photo and he is just gorgeous \u2014 mashallah,<\/p>

God is great, may He protect him. She told me she was keeping him out of the spotlight,<\/p>

and I said, “Fine, keep him hidden”.<\/span><\/p>

I did the same thing when I had Hamada \u2014 my son, Hamada. I used to hide him too.<\/p>

Photographers wanted to create stories and take pictures of him. It wasn’t until he was a<\/p>

bit older and started walking, that, well, every week you\u2019d find photos of Hamada and<\/p>

me in all the weekly magazines and newspapers with stories about what he was doing<\/p>

and all that.<\/p>

I: But you got married young, didn’t you?<\/p>

S: Yes. And getting married young is a way to stay away from trouble and rumours, and to<\/p>

have someone by your side. You see, the number of admirers had really started to grow<\/p>

as well. I did a movie, and in it, I met Mr. Mohamed Emara, my husband. He was just<\/p>

starting out in cinema; he\u2019s a cinematographer now and he works on a lot of projects.<\/p>

He\u2019s involved in all aspects of the industry.<\/p>

It was meant to be; we fell in love. But, of course, there was opposition from both sides\u2014 from me,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

from him, and from his family.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

I: His family objected, and your family objected. So, why did they object,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

and why did\u00a0<\/span>you?<\/span><\/p>

S: [Laughs] I mean, they wanted well, Mom would say to me, “Look, Dear, You are just<\/p>

starting out in life, (I was 21), with your whole future ahead of you. You are just beginning<\/p>

to make a name for yourself with the movies and TV . We were just getting started. So,<\/p>

she\u2019d say, “Just wait a bit, there’s no rush,” and so on.<\/p>

I told them no. And regarding Mohamed, at his home, they\u2019d say, “Just wait a while, son;<\/p>

you\u2019ve just graduated… why not look for an actress. Did it *have* to be a dancer?” You<\/p>

know how it is [laughs]. Anyway, time proved that the heart wants what it wants. What<\/p>

can you do?<\/p>

I: The heart wants what it wants. Truly. And time proved to both families that you were a<\/p>

wonderful woman and he was a kind, good man. And thank God, now so your family<\/p>

grew to love him?<\/p>

S: Yes.<\/p>

I: And his family?<\/p>

S: They loved me so much. You have no idea. They\u2019d call to check on me, invite me over.<\/p>

I\u2019d visit them, and they\u2019d come to us.<\/p>

I: But who was your role model among those who came before you?<\/p>

S: I loved, well, who did I love? In terms of dancing, who did I love? I loved Naima Akef,<\/p>

for instance and Samia Gamal. You might be surprised, but I really loved Fairouz when<\/p>

she first appeared.<\/p>

I: Hmm, the young Fairouz?<\/p>

S: Yes, the young one.<\/p>

We congratulate her, as she received an honour this year. I say, “A thousand<\/p>

congratulations; you truly deserve even more than this,” because we all admired her so<\/p>

much.<\/p>

She was truly a unique phenomenon \u2014 one of a kind. She certainly deserved the award;<\/p>

in fact, she should have received it long ago.<\/p>

I used to watch her movies, and I even styled my hair exactly like hers. If you saw me,<\/p>

you\u2019d say I looked exactly like Fairouz.<\/p>

I: You do resemble her from when she was young.<\/p>

S: Yes, really. I forgot to bring the photo \u2014 my hairstyle was just like hers. If you saw me,<\/p>

you\u2019d say, “It’s Fairouz!” . My hair was so lovely back then.<\/p>

I: What songs of hers did you love?<\/p>

S: I loved her dancing. There was that movie where she imitated all the dancers, it was<\/p>

incredible! She imitated everyone, even Badia Masabni who was the choreographer<\/p>

behind all those dances.<\/p>

She was a phenomenon, too, truly a phenomenon. And for all that her voice was high-<\/p>

pitched, she still delivered an exceptional performance. [Laughter] She really delivered.<\/p>

She\u2019d wear a traditional *galabeya* and imitate Shokoko and Abdel Muttalib \u2014<\/p>

Mashallah, truly If only we could find.<\/p>

I: She is someone who won’t be replicated.<\/p>

S: No, of course not. There are some artists who will never be replicated.<\/p>

I: You had very fierce competition with Nagwa Fouad, didn’t you?<\/p>

S: Yes, of course.<\/p>

I: You came from Alexandria and arrived right when she was active here.<\/p>

S: Yes, I came right when she was here. I arrived, and there was another dancer named<\/p>

Nahed Sabry, yes, Nahed Sabry. So, naturally, intense competition arose between me<\/p>

and her.<\/p>

We each had our own distinct style. There was an event at the Balloon Theatre, right<\/p>

when it first opened. Sout Al-Arab (Voice of the Arabs) was hosting a concert there. I<\/p>

wanted to go on early because I had five or six wedding gigs to attend.<\/p>

She wanted to go on before me, too. So, she put on her costume, stood right there, and<\/p>

positioned her two assistants behind her, holding the cymbals.<\/p>

I stood on the other side, wearing my costume, with my assistants standing there, you<\/p>

know how it is, the usual scene.<\/p>

The Sout Al-Arab announcer was in a real bind; he didn’t know who to introduce. He kept<\/p>

talking into the device in his hand, speaking to the radio crew downstairs, the ones<\/p>

sitting there with all the broadcasting equipment, saying, “Help us out! We’ve got a<\/p>

problem on stage: Soheir Zaki is in costume with her band ready, and Nagwa is in<\/p>

costume with her band ready. Who do I send out first?” .<\/p>

I had a huge amount of work because I was a newcomer, and everyone wanted to see<\/p>

me. I told myself, “Come on, girl, show some grit.” I decided to let her go on first, to show<\/p>

some sportsmanship. I wasn’t afraid; I had plenty of work, so I didn’t mind waiting for myturn. Of course, they were going to separate our acts, she\u2019d perform, then I would. I<\/p>

thought, “Well, I\u2019m not the one losing out.” So, I let her go on, took my band, and left. But<\/p>

it was quite a situation. You should have seen the presenter, poor guy, and Sama. But<\/p>

later on, after a long time, we became friends.<\/p>

You see, Abdel Halim Hafez, may he rest in peace, had a musical ensemble led by<\/p>

Maestro Ahmed Fouad Hassan, may he rest in peace, too.<\/p>

It was the *Al-Massiya* Orchestra. At the time, there was a potential engagement<\/p>

brewing between him and Nagwa, so Abdel Halim wanted to support Maestro Ahmed<\/p>

Fouad Hassan. Whenever he had a concert, and he was the star, of course, you\u2019d see<\/p>

the likes of Nagwa, dancers, and Lelbleba, for instance, performing monologues and<\/p>

doing vocal impressions, as well as Ahmed Ghanem, may he rest in peace. It was a<\/p>

lineup featuring Nagwa, Abdel Halim, Fayza, Warda, Sabah, Shadia, the whole group<\/p>

had to be there.<\/p>

The program had to include a dancer, a monologue artist, and so on, it was all part of the<\/p>

show. So, Abdel Halim would have my name crossed off the list whenever the television<\/p>

station was broadcasting a live concert featuring him. He would have my name removed<\/p>

and replace it with Nagwa Fouad. I got wind of this.<\/p>

At the time, there was a variety show called *Layl al-Qahira* (Cairo Night). The Variety<\/p>

Department manager asked me, “Soheir, what is going on between you and Abdel<\/p>

Halim?” I told him, “Honestly, Sir, there is nothing at all. On the contrary, I keep to myself.<\/p>

You see me come in, get dressed, go on stage, and then go straight from the stage to my<\/p>

car to rush to the next gig.” So, I spoke to my band, you know, the guys, like Sharaf<\/p>

Mohamed Ali and the rest. They started digging around for information and they found<\/p>

out: “We know now why you\u2019re getting bumped from the schedule \u2014 it\u2019s because Abdel<\/p>

Halim is going to be there.”<\/p>

I asked, “Why?” They said, since there were a few people named Ahmed Fouad Hassan,<\/p>

that out of courtesy to Ahmed Fouad Hassan, they would tell him, “No, include Nagwa,”<\/p>

because the concert was being broadcast live back in the days of radio and television.<\/p>

So, I met with Abdel Halim, you see, and I said, \u201cNow I understand; I used to think you<\/p>

disliked me, but I know now that you actually like me. You were just doing that out of<\/p>

courtesy”.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

I: Did you perform any charity concerts abroad, in Paris? Tell me about that. What did<\/p>

you do at the embassy?<\/p>

S: At our embassy in Paris? I organized a gala for the Al-Wafaa wal-Amal [Loyalty and<\/p>

Hope] Association, supporting people with disabilities, the sick, and so on. They<\/p>

commissioned me to do it, so I travelled there.<\/p>

I: So, you went to put on a show for Al-Wafaa wal-Amal? Meaning the proceeds would go<\/p>

toward charity. People really have to appreciate you for that, of course. Look at theprestige, the car, the cold weather, the embassy, and the media coverage, the Egyptian<\/p>

Embassy.<\/p>

S: Honestly, Mr. Mamdouh, these are moments in my life I will never forget.<\/p>

I: It makes you feel like your work really mattered \u2014 that you weren’t just\u2026<\/p>

S: And then, for instance, I performed at Abdeen Palace, I actually entered Abdeen<\/p>

Palace. I remember, while riding in the car, I asked him \u2014 You know, the US President<\/p>

was visiting Egypt, I don’t recall the exact details, and I was working late,<\/p>

driving in the car, and I said to him, “Is it really possible, Dear, that I might dance in front<\/p>

of President Nixon, say, at Koubbeh Palace or somewhere? I\u2019d love that. I really wish it<\/p>

would happen, Dear”<\/p>

. He said, “Well, if there is, they usually invite your father to these<\/p>

events, so…” And thank God, the very next day, the Presidency called me. They said, “We<\/p>

want you, and the Reda Troupe, too.\u201d It was during the early days of satellite<\/p>

broadcasting, when it was just starting to beam things out to the entire world.<\/p>

There was an incredible amount of press and media coverage, journalists from all over<\/p>

the globe, as well as our own Egyptian media. I suddenly got an idea. I thought, “With the<\/p>

satellite broadcasting everything” I wondered, “What if I just jumped right out in front of<\/p>

the presidents?” \u2014 Nixon, Sadat, Kissinger, the foreign ministers, the Prime Ministers,<\/p>

and all the country’s top officials. It was taking place in the gardens of Koubbeh Palace,<\/p>

where a stage had been set up. So, I jumped out, and suddenly I was facing the<\/p>

American security detail, you know, the ones standing there with their guns drawn like<\/p>

this.<\/p>
